This study analyze the energy and electricity prospects in the Mediterranean Basin by 2010-2020, and, also the oil, gas and electricity trade between the Mediterranean countries with a special review of gas and electric interconnections in the Mediterranean area which are the basis of the energy trade.

As seen the importance of this subject, this report is only a synthesis of the complete study carried out a survey of the prospects for Mediterranean countries concerning energy and electricity as far as the year 2010-2020, which is regularly updated by OME.

First, is given a recall about demographic and economic growth which are the determinants factors of energy and electricity demand in the Mediterranean countries treated just after.

Then all the actual oil, gas and electricity trade and exchanges are described before the presentation of the gas and electricity interconnections. These energy infrastructures will facilitate and improve the regional trade and, especially will permit to rise the level of energy trade between Mediterranean countries. Hide

In 2004, the OME has updated for its Members the previous OME Gas Study of 2001 for the EC-DG TREN. The study deals with the present and future gas supply potential to Europe from existing and potential new sources (2002, 2010, 2020). The study assesses reserves, resources, production potential, internal gas demand of producing countries, energy strategy, geopolitical considerations, existing and potential gas routes (pipelines and LNG), existing and planned infrastructure capacity, export potential, production and transport costs (pipeline and LNG) to Europe, etc. Supply costs curves are given for 2010 and 2020. This small document was presented on the occasion of a meeting of CEOs of Mediterranean energy companies in October 2000 which gathered to discuss the Euro-Mediterranean Energy Partnership with Ms de Palacio, European Commissioner for Energy and Transport. The document highlights energy prospects in the Mediterranean basin. After a brief introduction of some major socio-economic drivers, energy supply and demand prospects for 2010-2020 in the Mediterranean region as a whole and more specifically for Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries are presented. Oil and gas reserves and resources in the area are also addressed. Special attention is given to electricity and natural gas supply and demand prospects as well as electricity and gas interconnections in the Mediterranean. Hide

The study was carried out in collaboration with the IPTS, the Foundation ENI Enrico Mattei (Italy) and the IEPE (Institute of Economy and Policy of Energy - France) with the support of the European Commission - DG XII, within the framework of its JOULE III programme. It related to the evaluation of the potential for new energy technologies in the Mediterranean countries and the estimate of their possible contribution to the socio-economic development, the energy exchanges and the environmental protection in the region.


The study was performed in three main tasks:

· the development of the MEMA version of the POLES model of simulation, which allows a detailed representation of the Mediterranean countries;

· development and analysis of energy scenarios for the Mediterranean countries;

· market studies for new energy technologies and evaluation of the market potential and expected benefits.

The results of the study were presented on May 18th, 1999 during a seminar organized by OME jointly with the European Commission - DG XII in Brussels (Belgium). Hide

This study drafts long term energy scenarios (2010, 2020) for the Mediterranean countries (Northern, Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries). It includes two scenarios: a business as usual scenario and an alternative scenario based on greater effort at incorporating demand of demand-side measures and penetration of renewable energy sources, analyzes the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership and proposes an active role for Italy. The study was funded by the Italian Government through ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and the Environment) and was an official input to the “National Conference for Energy and the Environment” held in Rome 25-28 of November 1998. The aim of this Conference was to help defining the National Italian Energy and Environmental Plan for the coming years. The document includes the following chapters: i- Socio-economic context, ii- demand and supply scenarios, iii- main energy projects (gas, oil and electricity), development of the institutional framework (oil, gas and electricity), energy and the environment (contribution of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources for a sustainable development), conclusions and recommendations (Euro-Mediterranean market and Partnership, role for Italy).
